Overview
Studs provide secure mounting points for heavy shelves. If you don’t have a stud finder, use these methods to locate them.
Method 1: The Knock Test
- Knock lightly along the wall—hollow sounds mean no stud, solid sounds indicate a stud.
Method 2: Measuring from the Corner
- Most studs are 40cm–60cm apart from wall edges or door frames.
Method 3: Check Electrical Outlets
- Outlets are usually mounted on studs.
- Remove the cover plate and look for screws on either side.
Method 4: Use a Magnet
- A strong magnet will stick to hidden screws or nails in the drywall.
Method 5: Drill a Small Test Hole
- If uncertain, drill a small hole and insert a wire to feel for the stud.
